2 January 2024 - Part Two: Harbour set build - How big is big?

Pulled out my carrier to compare against the Yamato.

Not too much difference length-wise. Carrier is Shokaku. Measurement means the capital pier needs to be at least 500mm. Half a metre. Nothing else done; too chuffed at finding my missing Albatros planes to do anything other than touch-up other minis. And still recovering from this nasty flu.

Painting either vessel will take a whole day for both at best guess. Actual will be totally something else. Oh well, I do have lots to paint up anyway and got a whole year to do it.

Cheers.

2 January - Albatros found!

Quote
Persistence pays off...eventually.

Pre-amble
Good news! Found my missing Albatros. I had put them away for safekeeping and promptly forgot where I had put them.

They were in a case atop the Billy bookcase. Also discovered other aircraft - loans from a couple of good people in the same case and another case. Used them to run a demo/participation game at BrisCon 2022 (I think, not sure about the date but it was BrisCon and it was this century). After the event I put them away for safe storage and soon forget they existed...until now. So, I have to get in touch with those who loaned to arrange a collection or drop off.

These are all planes rarely seen or not normally available from hobby retailers (limited brands and popular types like Manfred von Richthofen's Red Fokker DR-1) unless you know where to look. Planes like Haberstadt and Pfalz. Don't want to name the others without doing some quick online research. A couple of Allied planes, one in Belgian colours. And another Albatros. For now these will suffice to give the green light to the two scenario options I wrote up days ago until I can return them to their respective owners.

Cheers.

2 January - Makeover Project - A review of those GW projects started or unfinished

Eldar Review
Just a review of where I am at with the Eldar force begun years ago. Picking up from where I left off requires seeing where I stopped. what needs doing, and so on.

This unit are a unit of my own creation, Eldar Sentinel Guardians.

I really like the exotic look of 40K Eldar, always have. Never going to table this force however but don't mind. I just like painting them. Some minor work is still needed on this unit - minor touch-up, bases detailed and finished. Will cost a few hours or one day.

Forge World Iron Hand Primarch - Ferrus Manus "The Gorgon"
Attempted this long ago. In much need of repair (attachments to his backpack are falling off) and a serious painting touch-up. Made a start by lightening the skin tone. Expect to work on this for a bit simply because it deserves better attention and there's so much detail on this that can't be fobbed off with drybrushing and wash. Seen other examples and I have much work left to do. Expect to spend an honest week bringing this up to display standard.

Cheers.

2 January 2024 - In Her Majesty's Name - Lord Curr's Company

Got into In Her Majesty's Name when it first came out many years ago. While clearing my display cabinet, I happened across several IHMN boxes. All have been painted but need touch-ups. So, started with Lord Curr's Company.

Just need to flock the base and apply a wash and these will be ready for the planned campaign (later this year). Next up for touch-up will be this lot...

The Servants of Ra including cultists, femme fatale, mummified priest, mad professor, and the leader bearing an ancient symbol of power. Got another 4 (or 5) painted boxes to go.

Cheers.

January 2 - Part Two - A proposed layout for the harbour

Quote
Strike while the iron's hot.

Pre-amble
Began planning a suitable layout tonight while trying to recover from this nasty flu that's been with me for over a week now. First proposal. As pointed out in header description, this will be subject to (much) amending, mind-changing, and revising.

Hopefully...

Otherwise, I am happy to go with this layout design if there are not too many objections or revisions. There is also the time constraint, i.e., the time schedule of my 2024 Makeover Project plan as posted earlier. I should add though that the Makeover Project plan was only ever a guideline to help me focus and not really a commandment.

Port description
Natural deep water that is able to cater to nearly all types of ships. A typical Pacific island overtaken by the enemy. Much construction made to improve and strengthen its function as a main harbour for the region. And it's a major threat to the Allied command as they strive to regain control of the region.

Capital Ship Pier
For future use. Specifically for use by big ships like Yamato/Musashi. When not used, handles several lesser capital ships - battlecruisers, cruisers, etc. Can even handle aircraft carriers (which I do have but not revealed yet - the Shokaku)

Piers
To handle all the vessels plying their trade in these waters.

Port Facilities
Storage warehouses as well as some limited manufacturing, repair shops, and administrative buildings. Includes accommodation for large military contingent.

Oil Storage
Self-explanatory

Fuel Storage
Also self-explanatory

No-Go Area
Sizeable local/native population areas clustered around a small headland. I may add more later on. It all depends on how complex or cluttered I make this board. This is marked on the map above in RED for a reason: don't target it.

Green hatched areas
Yes, you guessed it. Targetted areas for the Allied bombers and attack aircraft.

Construction
Will likely use styrofoam on a hard board base as foundation and then layer-up amd shape the landscape using some type of suitable modelling paste to give physical form. Then add some jungle foliage to add an element of "realism". But not going overboard.

Port Defences
Not started because the items are not yet acquired or assembled. Can use proxies to represent at a pinch (flat tic-tac toe counters for example) or can even scratch-build something suitable (time-willing).

Airfield
Considering whether to have an airfield (off-map) on the island or opt to have them stationed on a nearby island within reach. A harbour of this importance will have aerial coverage for certain. And that will be the case as I have both Naval and Army airplanes.

1 January 2024 - Handley Page bomber (1/72) and other planes

This has been sitting on my workbench for a while now. Managed to complete assembly (albeit dodgy in parts). At the time I decided not to glue the wing assembly because it's simply too wide for cartage. But I'm slowly changing my mind. As for the orange tiger stripes camo design, that's just too fancy. Right? Anyway, once glued and several other parts firmly secured, it will be ready for Scenario One.

I now need to check how many Sopwith Camels I have available. Not sure if I have enough for a flight of four. Maybe reduce to whatever I have available. Or throw in what's available for the time period being fought.

1 January 2024 - Part One of Harbour set done

Happy New Year and all that jazz.

Sat down and painted up a few things to complete the first part of this Harbour set build.

These painted ships should suffice for the solo combined naval/air wargame that will take place later on this year. From left to right the "bigger" vessels are the destroyer Akatsuki, the destroyer Sakura, the Type 19 Minesweeper, the Type 13 Sub chaser, and the Hiroshima-class Minelayer (according to the Tamiya site). Heavy black wash finished off the painting. Used both Vallejo and cheap craft paints.

The port facilities and surrounding buildings including enough for a small town or couple of local villages. Just added another coating of paint on the main structures. Not going to improve the oil storage tanks. They'll probably get bombed anyway by the American attack aircraft.

With that done, Part One is complete. Part Two consists of the remaining terrain elements - part of the island for a backdrop and the port itself. Maybe add a nearby military airfield.

Correction: While I acquired Tamiya 1/700 Waterline series aircraft (Early War), I also acquired Trumpeter clear plastic aircraft (also 1/700). I have yet to drag them out and start painting. Will add them to Part Two's to-do activity. Needing more 20mm round bases as well. Cheers.
